The Best That Never Was

"WHY DIDN'T WE GET THIS!?"

It happens in all generations of video games. Sometimes Europe gets them, other times its a Japan only title. Sometimes, its an exclusive game to North America. Today I want to talk about the some NES games we never got here in North America.

Those include:
  • NES Wars
  • Mr. Gimmick
  • Sweet Home

We begin with Famicom Wars:

A shame we never got the original on the NES!

Reason we never got it: Nintendo thought the Western audience wouldn't like a military strategy game. When the first game of its ilk came to the Game Boy Advance, it was a big hit. Swing and a miss Nintendo!

About the game: Basically you play as either Red Star or Blue Moon out to conquer each other to win the war. Playing this game is a ton of fun. Like many others who have played the GBA version (which is the first time the series ever came across the pond) we knew it was an instant hit. To win the game you either eliminate all the opposition, or take control of the opponent's headquarters.

Play war in your living room!

Next up, Mr. Gimmick!
Why it never came over:
Mr. Gimmick was too little too late. By the time the game came out in '92 Nintendo never bothered to bring it over Stateside. The aging NES in America was truly robbed of a great game in both music, graphics, and challenge. Too bad!

About the game: You play as Yumetaro your girls new favourite toy! Yes, you play as a toy. Anyways, all of her other (older) toys are jealous so they kidnap her to a different dimension. This game is one tough cookie. The physics in this game as you run, jump, bound off of objects is unbelievable for an 8-Bit game.

Run! You fool!

And finally, Sweet Home.

 The title is extra misleading!

Why it never came out: Well, it had gratuitous violence, death, gore, and it looked AND sounded scary as hell. It would have been a bonafide hit.

Talk about survival horror? This game is probably the first of its kind. The premise of the game is that you control (one at a time mind you) a gang of men and women who are locked away in a mansion. Each member has a certain ability that will aid them in escaping. Its a turn based rpg, with random battles. And the kicker, if any of your party members die, they're gone for good! Because of this, you can get one of five different endings. Isn't that cool?!

Here's some really cool screen shots. Do yourself a favour, download this game and find the English patch. Its that good.

Hope you liked this little look at some games that should have been pushed out of Japan. But sadly, never came to be.

In the meantime, in between time!
