Sunsoft (The Grade)

"THIS ISN'T A NINTENDO GAME?!"

One of the best of the best on the good old 8-bit platform, Sunsoft. Man oh man I can recall the very first Sunsoft game I played way back in 1990. That game was Batman: The Video Game.

As a kid I always thought that Nintendo made ALL of the games that came out on the NES. It wasn't until my older brother corrected me (thanks big bro!) that I understood some companies just made the games or published them to Nintendo. Sunsoft games immediately stood up and above a LOT of other publishers and developers to me as a kid.

The graphics, music, gameplay, all blew me away. You would have thought Nintendo themselves developed their games. It was simply that good. That little company doesn't get near as much praise that it should. So here's a little list I compiled grading the company's contributions as a whole to the little gray toaster.

  • Batman (A) Great music, gameplay, and graphics. If you have an NES, you NEED this game. Its that good. Trust me!
  • Batman: Return of the Joker (B) a lot tougher than the first game. Still, great graphics and sound.
  • Blaster Master (A) Sunsoft's hidden gem and an absolute force. This game while weak on story makes up for it in every other category.
  • Fester's Quest (D) eh, the music is good, but continuing is just a burden. You start all the way back to the beginning when you die...so you lose ALL of your items and power-ups.
  • Freedom Force (B) an underrated little Light Gun game. Grab it!
  • Gremlin's 2: The New Batch (B+) Another great game. Music is excellent and so are the graphics and gameplay. Sunsoft did a magnificent job developing their licensed titles.
  • Lemmings (C) the computer version is better.
  • Journey to Silius (B) This was supposed to be a Terminator game. Unfortunately,  Sunsoft lost the license. Still a wonderful game. Excellent music.
  • Uforia (B+) Quirky, and a fun little game.

Sunsoft (A)

Sunsoft were kings of the underrated gems. They truly knew how to push the NES to its max. Unfortunately, they were stuck with some very old or mediocre licenses in the SNES days. But we can still relieve our favourite Sunsoft moments from the 8-bit era. I for one, will never forget their most stupendous work.

In the meantime, in between time!
